Tether today confirmed its plan to launch USD₮ on the RGB protocol. The move positions stablecoins directly on Bitcoin for the first time. RGB, which just released its 0.11.1 mainnet version, is designed to transform Bitcoin’s role beyond a store of value.
It introduces tools for private, scalable, and user-controlled digital asset issuance. The addition of USDT to RGB marks a significant leap. Tether users will gain the ability to transact in stablecoins through Bitcoin’s security layer.
That means faster payments, greater privacy, and lighter transaction footprints. It also allows Bitcoin to compete more aggressively with other blockchains already hosting stablecoins.
Tether CEO Calls Stablecoin on Bitcoin “Overdue”
The integration creates a brand-new Bitcoin dimension. Bitcoin and USD₮ now coexist in a user’s very same wallet. Transfers are now instantaneous in both the online and offline realms. That offers users flexibility without leaving Bitcoin’s ecosystem.
Paolo Ardoino, Tether CEO, noted that such an evolution is overdue. “Bitcoin requires a stablecoin which is actually native, lightweight, private, and scalable,” he noted. He described RGB as a path leading towards such a destination and again reiterated Tether’s position on Bitcoin as a foundation for an open and free financial system.
Its practical impact can be tremendous. Traders get a safe remittance instrument in Bitcoin’s security. Citizens in unstable economies receive digital dollars without leaving the Bitcoin economy. Even offline transfers are possible with reach into low-connectivity regions.
Shift in stablecoin race toward Bitcoin
It marks Tether’s continued predominance in the digital assets segment. As USDT currently leads global stablecoin adoption, its expansion into RGB marks intent to venture further into Bitcoin’s tomorrow.
The company frames this as innovation and imperative. Bitcoin, it argues, should not only come first but also prove most useful.
The announcement also highlights how the ecosystem for stablecoins is in transition. Competitors built upon Ethereum, Solana, and a few other chains. Bitcoin, though, had largely been absent in this competition. RGB changes all this.
It blends Bitcoin’s longevity with Tether’s liquidity in order to offer something new: a stablecoin pegged on the oldest most decentralized network.
For billions around the globe, it means one thing: money can travel quicker, more securely, and less hinderedly. With RGB live and Tether ready in the wings to produce USD₮, Bitcoin’s second act gets underway.
