Former Strategy Lead at Solana Foundation, Austin Federa, has left the project to co-found a new protocol that aims to revolutionize global, high-performance networks. The new venture, DoubleZero, develops infrastructure for a distributed world at a neutral base layer while targeting enhanced global connectivity at the core of both the internet and high-performance blockchains.
In a post by Federa on X, DoubleZero will solve one of the most important problems at the heart of the Internet and blockchain: global, base-layer connectivity.
DoubleZero is more than Layer 1 or Layer 2; it is an absolutely new concept- the first N1 in the world, neutrally designed base layer infrastructure for the support of distributed systems. Federa and co-founders Mateo Ward and Andrew McConnell build a high-performance network constructed from independent contributors using dedicated fiber and subsea cables.
How DoubleZero will boost bandwidth and reduce latency
It targets an order of magnitude increase in bandwidth and decrease in latency while significantly improving decentralization and censorship resistance. This new network architecture will support tens of millions of transactions per second. Though the team starts with Solana, DoubleZero will be built as a foundational layer for all high-performance blockchains.
DoubleZero is a permissionless network that can scale and fortify the global infrastructure with independently contributed fiber links. Unlike other traditional transport layers, DoubleZero will also be able to provide filtration and verification services, integrated into ensuring data integrity through open-source code.
This decentralized architecture also allows blockchain networks to avoid most communication bottlenecks. Hence, it is reaching an upper bound in performance that is close to the theoretical maximum. Fundamentally, DoubleZero is a vision toward the future of the internet and how it may redefine how blockchain networks interact with the outside world.
The creators believe it is the key to unlocking high-performance blockchain ecosystems to their full potential, the missing infrastructure layer that enables the next generation of distributed systems.
