Many gamers haven’t jumped into Web3 games because the process of using cryptocurrency wallets can be quite complicated. To address this, the Web3 gaming protocol Elympics teamed up with the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA) and PlayToEarn, a blockchain game data tracker, to create an industry report titled “The Future of Web3 Gaming is Competitive: Global Gaming Report 2024.”

The report examined the current state of blockchain gaming and surveyed 1,000 gamers worldwide to obtain their insights on Web3 games. It explored why people enjoy gaming and asked why some participants have yet to try blockchain-based games.

Over 10% of people surveyed reported that they haven’t tried blockchain games mainly because they find cryptocurrency wallets too complicated. Meanwhile, 7.3% mentioned they don’t grasp the value of Web3 gaming. Additionally, 2.4% of gamers expressed happiness with traditional Web2 gaming, while 9.1% said that blockchain-based gaming just doesn’t interest them.

Simplifying crypto for gamers

When asked why they play games, many mentioned airdrops and the chance to make money as their main reasons. People also pointed out that they enjoy competing with other players.

In the report, Elympics CEO Michal Dabrowski noted that Web3 gaming has struggled to attract mainstream gamers. However, he believes a big change is on the horizon. Dabrowski wrote:

As more developers turn their attention to Web3, we’re likely to see a rise in high-quality games that attract more players.

Although the complexities of crypto wallets have kept some gamers from diving into Web3 games, projects like The Open Network (TON) are actively working to make this process easier. On Apr. 19, TON Foundation investments director Justin Hyun shared that Telegram’s Mini Apps would make interacting with cryptocurrency so seamless that users might not even realize they’re doing it.

Since then, people have flocked to the TON ecosystem to try out clicker games. For example, games like Hamster Kombat have already attracted over 300 million users, helping to onboard Telegram users into the world of Web3 gaming.
