Opera Mini’s self-custodial crypto wallet, MiniPay, has added Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC stablecoins for payment transfers in a new upgrade. The firm has also introduced the Pocket feature to enable one-click swaps between three stablecoins, including Celo blockchain’s cUSDT, a stablecoin MiniPay used initially.
According to the official announcement, Opera has built its MiniPay version 2 on the Celo blockchain and transformed its swap system by collaborating with the EVM-compatible stablecoin platform Mento Labs. This drag-and-swap functionality allows users to drag one stablecoin and drop it into another digital pot for instant exchange. It costs a fee in sub-cents without any hidden charges.
MiniPay attracted over 3M users
First launched in Sep. 2023, MiniPay amassed over 3 million users across Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana in less than a year. The latest upgrade targeting Africa simplifies the process of onboarding mainstream to crypto and comes with a lighter version of 2 MBs. By providing access to digital assets through an easy-to-use interface, the updated wallet eliminates the need for users to have a technical background. The latest version also integrates various on and off-ramp providers to facilitate cash-in and out processes.
By adopting USDT and USDC, which represent 85% of the stablecoin market, MiniPay now supports the growth of widely used stablecoins worldwide. While highlighting the impact of the initiative, Opera Mini added in a statement;
This upgrade is part of MMiniPay’sbroader mission to bridge the gap between traditional financial systems and the emerging Web3 landscape. We aim to make digital finance technologies accessible to everyone, simplifying complex processes.
In addition to the Pocket, MiniPay version 2 comes with a Discover page. This page integrates a widened collection of DApps, bringing direct access to financial tools such as Universal basic income protocols, games, and more. Also, it prevents the pain of converting stablecoins into fiat currency while allowing users to pay bills through their wallets.
