A hacker who took control of the Tron DAO X account is estimated to have stolen around $45,000 in unauthorized funds, according to a spokesperson from Tron.
The Tron public relations team confirmed that on May. 2, the Tron DAO account posted a contract address and sent direct messages to request payments for promotional advertising on the Tron account. They mentioned:
Our security team quickly identified the intrusion and cut off access to the hacker, but we ask the community to continue to be vigilant. We will never ask anyone for payments like this via DM or otherwise.
Furthermore, the PR team said that based on the fraudulent contract address the hacker posted, the amount illegally requested seemed to be around $45,000.
Tron DAO hack tied to New York post breach?
The Tron team noted that there “appear to be some similarities” between the two security incidents when asked if the same hacker could be responsible for the alleged hack of the New York Post’s X account on May. 3.
However, they also warned that the investigation is still ongoing and any definitive tie would be premature. Tron DAO stated in a May. 2 update on X that a malicious social engineering attack had targeted one of their team members, compromising their accounts.
The Tron team is still investigating and says they’re working with law enforcement. Meanwhile, Tron founder Justin Sun also claimed that crypto exchange OKX ignored a law enforcement request to freeze funds stolen in the attack.
OKX founder and CEO Star Xu has openly denied the claim, and Sun has deleted the original post with the allegation.
