A new Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-7781) aims to significantly enhance the network’s performance by cutting block times by 33% and boosting overall throughput by 50%, according to developers.

According to a proposal by Illyriad Games co-founder Ben Adams, the main focus would be shrinking block times from 12 to 8 seconds, decreasing latency for rollup, and increasing the “blob” capacity-temporary construction of data structures used to decrease the layer-2 network fees.

Adams said EIP-7781 could increase transaction throughput by about 33% without raising common block or blob counts. This would smooth out bandwidth usage over time rather than overloading the network. This could give very significant performance increases for Ethereum without having to increase either the blob or gas limits.

Ethereum developer highlights major improvements

In a post to X, developer Cygaar called EIP-7781 a monumental first step toward bettering Ethereum’s base layer. Cygaar said that if the proposal passes, it could further optimize DEXes by about 1.22 times, thus making them more efficient and saving users more.

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake added that a reduction in slot time would further open more doors for other improvements and smoothen the experience of its users.

Drake said reducing confirmation times by a third would make transactions much more efficient and DEXes such as Uniswap much cheaper. Still, there have been some considerations about possible downsides.

The times of smaller slots could make timing games more pronounced, though the impact may still be tolerable under current network conditions. EIP-7781 is heralded as a major move in optimizing Ethereum’s Layer 1.
