Coinbase has started introducing new services that allow artificial intelligence agents to pay businesses and carry out cryptocurrency trades. Business customers can begin accepting payments from AI agents through the x402 protocol starting this week. Coinbase developed and incubated the protocol as part of a broader effort to support machine-driven online transactions.
Coinbase Business users can receive USDC payments from AI agents without changing their existing payment settings. Coinbase Payments powers the service, allowing businesses to process transactions as soon as an AI agent creates a digital wallet. Merchant checkout systems are also designed to support automated purchases made by AI software.
According to Coinbase Business, the new payment flow mirrors familiar online shopping experiences while adapting the checkout process for AI agents. The company said AI agents can make purchases after creating a digital wallet, while businesses can offer products and services through a checkout system built to support automated transactions.
AI Payment System Expands for Businesses
Businesses using Coinbase Business can now accept USDC directly from AI agents without any extra configuration. Merchants can also create reusable payment links and automatically collect customer information for accounting and transaction records.
Coinbase also released the CDP x402 SDK for developers. The software development kit allows payment support to be added to web services, APIs, or MCP servers with just three lines of code. The package combines payment features with recommended extensions, allowing developers to build AI payment support more efficiently.
Coinbase said the simplified integration reduces development work while helping applications process automated digital payments. The company built the developer tools for businesses, creating services that expect increased interaction from AI-powered software.
Coinbase Adds AI Trading Features
Coinbase also expanded the trading tools available through Coinbase for Agents. Users can provide trading instructions in everyday language, while AI agents monitor market activity and automatically place trades when they meet the selected conditions.
The trading service provides live market prices, order book information, trading volume, and open-order tracking. Users can also create automated trading rules linked to market changes. One example is placing a trade after Ethereum falls by 5%, allowing AI agents to respond without manual intervention.
Coinbase said AI agents use its combined payment, account, and developer products to carry out financial activity. The company believes automated software will increasingly handle digital transactions on behalf of users throughout the day.
Growing AI Activity Shapes Coinbase Strategy
Coinbase said AI agents are already becoming the largest users of developer documentation, reflecting growing demand for systems built around automated software rather than human users. The company views rising AI agent activity as a sign that online financial services must support machine-to-machine transactions.
Internet payment systems largely support people who enter card details or complete checkout manually. Coinbase believes increasing AI activity is changing that pattern, creating demand for payment systems designed for automated software.
