Cloudflare introduced Cloudflare Wallets on August 4, 2026, a programmable wallet system built for AI agents and internet-based services. Cloudflare Wallets allows users to store stablecoins, receive funds, and pay for online services through digital payment features. The launch marks another step in Cloudflare’s effort to connect web services with digital payments.

Cloudflare plans to release two wallet options. Account Wallets will belong to individuals or organizations and will let owners deposit funds, withdraw balances, and grant spending access to wallets used by AI agents. Virtual Wallets will work through API keys and will purchase services only within limits approved by an Account Wallet owner.

Virtual Wallets are designed to pay for products such as APIs, Model Context Protocol tools, AI inference, online content, and data services. Payment authority will remain under rules defined by Account Wallet owners, giving organizations direct control over how agent-operated wallets spend available balances.

Cloudflare Introduces Human-Readable Wallet Identity System

Cloudflare is also developing a human-readable wallet identity system. Businesses will be able to assign wallet handles such as research.example.cloudflare.pay, making software identities easier for merchants to recognize. The use of readable identities will remain optional, allowing merchants to decide whether unidentified agents receive equal access or lower priority.

Wallet handles will not replace cryptographic verification. Cloudflare compared the design to the Domain Name System, where readable website names point to internet addresses. Instead, they will link directly to an agent’s cryptographic key while keeping existing verification methods unchanged.

Account Wallet owners will receive spending controls that include approved merchant lists, spending allowances, and maximum transaction limits. The purpose of these controls is to let AI agents pay for low-cost services without asking for approval before every transaction.

x402 Foundation Gains Major Industry Backing

Over the past year, Cloudflare has steadily developed its payment framework through a series of updates. It launched the x402 Foundation with Coinbase in September 2025, later integrated x402 into its Agents SDK and MCP servers, and saw the Linux Foundation host the standard in April before its operational launch on July 14 with 40 members backed by 22 organizations.

Cloudflare and Stripe lead the 17 premier members of the x402 Foundation, alongside major companies such as Google, Circle, Amazon Web Services, Visa, and Mastercard. Cloudflare’s documentation highlights support for multiple blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Solana, and others, while USDC acts as the settlement asset through Coinbase’s public facilitator.

DefiLlama data cited in the announcement shows that the stablecoin market has reached a total capitalization of $300.391 billion, with USDT holding a 60.95% share. Meanwhile, Amazon Web Services and Coinbase expanded x402 support to CloudFront and WAF in June, while MoonPay introduced the Open Wallet Standard as open source in March.
